Why continuously blame the universe for all its curses, miseries and unfairness when all that’s really happening is just the size of our ego bursting. If we would actually admire the beauty of it all (because whether we like it or not, there is beauty in chaos), magical things may really happen. But then here’s that ever blazing element that keeps on getting in the way: fear. It’s always there. Let’s just brush it aside and think about the possibilities… The GOOD ones. The ETERNAL ones!

Those were the days… My Koran, my Bible, my Thorah...

Those were the days… My Koran, my Bible, my Thorah #march2005 #carineera

What I think Summer’s track should sound like…...

What I think Summer’s track should sound like… Completely hooked. I had the fantastic opportunity of interviewing shoe designer Natacha Marro, as well as reviewing NYC’s latest darling concept store, Fivestory and interviewing its founder, Claire Distenfeld and Ryan Korban, its interior designer. I also got to produce and direct a conceptual shoot with Marro’s statuesque designs with photographer Juste Suminaite. Can’t wait to delve onto the next projects 2013 has in store!

I had never seen Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Romeo + Juliet up until last night and - I’m simply bewitched. The scene where the two protagonists meet, at a ball held by the Capulets, is a wonder: the original score was composed by British music producer Nellee Hooper, Scottish composer Craig Armstrong, and English music composer and producer Marius de Vries, and serves as the instrumental to Des’ree’s ‘Kissing You’ song (the film’s love theme). The different degrees of violin simply transport you to this crucial moment and - phenomenally - almost gives you a taste of what it’s like to be in love (and won’t have anything stand in its way). Just. What do we have here. I know it’s been a while but rather than explain the how and the why related to my absence, let’s just cut to the chase: I just received this March 1994 issue of US Vogue and my Lord have I well chosen! Seriously, I cannot begin to explain the gem that is this issue. Remember that editorial shot by Meisel with glamazons wearing Chanel mini skirts courtesy of Karl? Up until a few years ago, I have been madly and incessantly trying to track down two things: the date of publication and the fashion editor of that image. To my joy and endless delight, “Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion” the book that ultimately catapulted the fashion editor into proper stardom, had that exact photograph placed right into Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele’s portfolio, then US Vogue’s fashion director (along with Grace. Clearly there is no need for last names here).

I immediately ordered the issue and, as I started flicking through it with the same excitement like a kid in a candy store, couldn’t get over just how many photographs have become iconic that originally appeared in this issue! I call the following out takes a feast for the eyes. ENJOY!!!

RECENT PROJECT: WTAW - OLYMPIA SCARRY

RECENT PROJECT: WTAW - OLYMPIA SCARRY

RECENT PROJECT: WTAW - VANESSA BEECROFT

RECENT PROJECT: WTAW - VANESSA BEECROFT

RECENT PROJECT: INTRODUCING WHAT THE ARTISTS WORE

RECENT PROJECT: INTRODUCING WHAT THE ARTISTS WORE:
As of today, I’ll be selecting the best looks from today’s contemporary artists on the website on a regular basis.
Now, if only you’d know how long it took me to get my hands on this issue of American Vogue. Because this is not just another magazine issue. It’s kind of historical really, in more ways than one. This precise November 1988 issue saw Anna Wintour at the top of the masthead as editor-in-chief, a position she’s been holding for almost 25 years now. Not only does it celebrate her inaugural newest tenure, it also features for the very first time a model (Michaela Bercu) wearing jeans. With a Christian Lacroix Haute Couture jacket no less. Ms. Wintour had (probably, maybe) no idea at the time that she would launch the phenomenal trading down style or democratisation of fashion as luxury experts like to call it. A total departure from the close-up cover shots we were used to back then. Bercu was photographed by the great Peter Lindbergh in the most candid manner possible with an impeccable wardrobe edited by one my favourite fashion editors, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, who was the publication’s fashion director at the time. This cover says it all to me: a future that was predicted so acurately. I love how Michaela is wearing the jacket so effortlessly; to me this ensemble is what defines my vision of ‘chic’: an unusual combination of items that brings a breath of fresh air, paired with an ever-laid back, confident attitude.

I’ve been adamant to get this issue because of its status (in my eyes at least). But thank God for Ebay. After several months of grueling research, I had finally found it. Maybe I paid for it a little more than I should have but it was well worth it. After all, this is where it all started…

I think there’s no need to warn you that you’ll be...

I think there’s no need to warn you that you’ll be seeing A LOT of roses on this site… Sigh.

IN VOGUE’S WORDS: “THE PARTY OF THE YEAR”
I...

IN VOGUE’S WORDS: “THE PARTY OF THE YEAR”

I know, I know. So predictable to compile a best dressed list from perhaps the biggest and most enduring fashion event of the year, right? Well actually, it would be a disgrace not to mention and honour those who were impeccably dressed for me. Now, you should know that aside from some personalities looking too alluring for words, the long-awaited “Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations” exhibition is finally open for visitors at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They could not have chosen women with more different views on fashion, yet the two are bound to be compared, and therefore inevitably linked. While Schiaparelli claimed that fashion is indeed “art”, her counterpart Miuccia strongly believes the opposite. But we can’t help but put Ms. Prada in the visionary category (her collections speak for themselves. No other brand has had such consistency of strong statements for over a decade). A must-see exhibit for anyone who is either curious or passionate about clothes.

As for my best dressed list, I know most of you will feel I’ve left out many. But truth be told, these are my ‘coup de coeur’ as we say in French. However I must admit that I was anxiously waiting for photos of two style mavens to surface; I would have no such luck! Um, Kate? Daphne? Oh well, we’ll always have next year. You two were greatly missed!

It could easily be the soundtrack to a movie about a man having lived many lives (don’t ask why, though). It leaves me pensive and I immediately drift into daydream mode. I sometimes forget how powerful music can be… There aren’t many like the great Yusuf (who was once Cat Stevens).

ps I highly recommend the entire album. It’s kinda sick.

I recently came across this piece of cloth at home in...

I recently came across this piece of cloth at home in Switzerland and for some reason, it immediately caught my eye. I’m just completely in love with this pastel-powdered pink. Naturally, I asked my grandmother where she got it from and it turned out that it belonged to her mother; apparently it’s a typical Damascene (from Damascus, Syria) workmanship called ”aghabani” that was made in the early 20th century. My grandmother told me that it was used it as “boukjah” to wrap and protect soaps, undergarments and towels when her mother was getting married… I always ask for any family anecdotes because I think it’s important to know as much information as possible on your genealogy. And I’m a sucker for nostalgia so there you go. You can be sure I’ll be on the lookout for any family antique ;-)
